Teen Girls and Twilight: Why Do We Buy It?

A great post about Twilight on the F Bomb: Teen Girls and Twilight: Why Do We Buy It? I agree with the author, as there are certain images being sold in the series. What seems so appetizing, if you will are the images of true love. It's a love so deep and romantic that is just unrealistic. I do think that many see this, but still want to watch the hyperidealized version of love. What are your thoughts?

Dr. Aragon, what follows is an excerpt from my blog which addresses your question, along with some of the other feminist criticism on Twilight on the web. I invite you to read and/or comment, and I am looking forward to your book on the subject (if you still intend to write/publish), although we don't necessarily agree.

I think that we as young and mature women buy Twilight because sometimes, we just want things to be simple.

And it is really as simple as that.

There are sociological repercussions in the world as a result of feminism, and the popularity of the old stereotypes and roles in our youth are a direct reflection of what is happening...we should take heed of the need for BALANCE as we go forward in the future to ensure equility in the sexes and to promote a more egalitarian society in general....

If you are going to analyze the series, might I suggest the following:

1. Bella's overall change as a character from the first novel to the last pages of Breaking Dawn,

2.The SERIOUS changes in Bella's lines, attitudes, and reactions to Edward that are taking place as the saga moves from book to movie

3. Young girls' actual response to Bella and Edward's relationship (they MIGHT just surprise you and take issue with the same things you would/have.)

I hope you address these issues in your book, and thank you for taking the time to read my comment.
